All this is at a very high success rate, which compares very favorably to the best of hospitals in the West.

Lifeline Multi Specialty Hospitals at Chennai, Gem Hospitals , Balaji Dental and Craniofacial Hospital are some of the other hospitals offering similar treatment and facilities. All these hospitals also offer corrective surgery after injuries and treatment for congenital deformities like cleft lip, protruding upper or lower jaw, short upper lip and deformities in facial structure. Gastric Banding is the latest treatment available for obesity and Chennai is fast becoming a hub for this form of treatment. This is nothing but a form of a gastric bypass surgery for weight control.

Gastric banding is a minimally invasive procedure involving placing of a silicon band around the upper part of the stomach, thus decreasing its capacity. Many prefer gastric banding to gastric bypass because it is simpler, and the patient is back to normal in a day or two. Postoperative care is also simple, and the size of the bands can be adjusted to bring about the desired weight loss. The best part of the procedure is that it is completely reversible.

Gastric bypass involves both restricting the food intake by creating smaller stomach pouches with the help of staples and bypassing a segment of the intestine resulting in decreased absorption of food. This, however, involves surgery and a significant healing and recovery period.

Both the procedures cost the same, about Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000.Though gastric bypass is a permanent solution because with banding, dilution of the band causes the stomach to regain its original size after a couple of years. Even so, it is becoming extremely popular.

The latest in surgery meaning ´ No holes and no scar´ was recently performed at the GEM Hospital in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. A young obese women got rid of her ungainly flab in this method just a few weeks before her wedding. The new method called NOTES which is the short form for natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery uses the existing openings in the body like the belly button, mouth, or the vagina for inserting the surgical stapler equipment. The stapler would be pushed either through the mouth, umbilical hole or vagina, and then the stomach would be divided. The sliced excess portion of the stomach is pulled out through the same hole. The system was first perfected by the John Hopkins University in the US. The procedure was first said to have been tried on pigs in the Coimbatore Institute before being perfected. Five such procedures have already been performed. Age seems to be no bar as this procedure was recently performed on an obese middle-aged woman. The cost of the procedure is the same as laproscopic surgery i.e., Rs one lakh. The hospital has designed its own equipment to reduce the costs, and the patent for the design of the equipment will be applied for, soon.
